After service in the Mexican War, Nathan Kimball became a general officer in the Union army; subsequently engaged in the life insurance business in Indianapolis, 1872-1873; and in 1879 was postmaster at Ogden, Utah. The son, a graduate of the Military Academy, retired with the rank of captain in 1894; he and his wife Stella A. John Brooke's companions on the voyage and in Melbourne were "Eliza" and "Tom". Their ship landed in Melbourne on 12 Oct. 1852. Their shop was situated at 125 Swanston Street. Kimball, Nathan, 1823?-1898

A native of Washington County, Ind., Kimball served with Indiana regiments during the Mexican and Civil Wars, gaining the rank of major general. He was state treasurer from 1867 to 1871, and served in the Indiana General Assembly in 1873. In 1874 he moved to Utah and served as U.S. Surveyor and later postmaster of Ogden.
